The suspension upgrades make a big difference on the C70 convertible. The upgraded sway bars, Bilsteins, and strut brace reduce body roll and make the car feel noticeably tighter and less flexible than stock while retaining its comfortable GT character.
Speaking of comfort, the front seats in this car are the most comfortable seats I've ever experienced with outstanding thigh support. Back seats can fit large adults. Two of friends who combine for 12 ft 5 and 500 lbs fit in the back.
The HPT turbo 5-cylinder has the distinctive Volvo five-cylinder exhaust note. It's an old school turbo setup where the boost seriously kicks in above 3k RPMs with amazing spool sounds. Combined with the manual, it's a really fun and unusual analog-era Volvo. It is basically mechanically equivalent to the highly-coveted Volvo 850R. These P80 cars are also relatively straightforward to wrench on, with good parts availability and a large enthusiast community. Tons of space in the engine bay.
This car exemplifies understated performance. In true Swedish fashion.
**Known Issues**
• Rear glass separating from convertible-top canvas (can be re-glued without replacing the top)
• Power top operates through almost the entire opening cycle but stops just short of fully stowing, causing the top warning chime with the roof down
• Driver's door doesn't open from the inside handle
• Driver's seat heater doesn't work
• Lower dash/knee-bolster panel needs to be resecured
• Rear-seat center trim piece is missing
• Passenger seat has scratches/wear
• Some exterior paint scratches/scrapes consistent with age
I'm being upfront about the flaws. It's not a perfect collector car, but the underlying spec is difficult to find: **HPT + 5-speed manual + 105k miles + long California history**, with some worthwhile enthusiast upgrades already done.
Happy to provide additional photos, underside pictures, cold-start/driving video, exhaust video, or video of the top operation.
