Join a research study led by Dr. Thorsten Kahnt investigating how specific brain regions involved in smell influence scent perception and related behaviors. Using transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation (TUS), a non-invasive technique that temporarily alters brain activity, the study aims to understand how we perceive smells and use them to guide our behavior.
You will have up to five visits engaging in various smell-related tasks, such as identifying, rating, or comparing scents, and associating specific scents with certain outcomes. These tasks will be conducted both before and after TUS to investigate how the brain processes smells. Tasks will be paired with MRI scans to monitor brain activity and evaluate the effects of TUS on brain function, as well as its impact on how we smell and learn.
Inclusion Criteria:
• Age18-45 years old.
• In good general health, based on medical assessment.
• Right-handed.
• Willing to avoid alcohol, limit caffeine and fast before visits).
• Fluent in English (for task validity and informed consent).
The study will take place at the NIDA IRP Biomedical Research Center in Baltimore, MD. Participants within 50 miles may receive arranged travel or reimbursed travel and up to $50 per hour in compensation.
