1928 Ford Model A Phaeton that has been slightly modified as a period hot rod with smaller wheels and tires, a dropped front axle, and a modified diamond-block Model B engine. This car was owned and built by an original Southern California hot rodder who raced at El Mirage in the 1940’s. The body is mostly original Ford steel, with a few steel reproduction parts such as the running boards and rear body panel.
The engine features modifications for oil pressure to the insert main bearings and connecting rods, a Windfield aluminum high-compression head, Windfield cam, Scat crankshaft, Pertronix electronic ignition, headers, dual Stromberg 97 carburetors, and a lightened flywheel with a V-8 clutch. The thrust bearings have been relocated to the center main. A pinned crack repair on the surface of the engine block was completed when the engine was built and is holding fine. The engine makes significantly more power than a stock Model A.
The stock Model A 3-speed transmission has straight-cut, non-synchronized gears and is supplemented by a 36% overdrive Mitchel gear splitter with synchro, effectively providing six forward gears and improved cruising speed. The stock wishbone has been pie-cut and welded to restore caster lost from the dropped front axle. The car retains its original 6-volt positive-ground electrical system, non-pressurized cooling system, and stock mechanical brakes, all of which work well. The upholstery is genuine leather.
The restoration and paint are approximately 10 years old. The single-stage paint is very nice but has a few imperfections. The original soft top is not available, but the original unrestored steel top bows are present and in good condition except for one missing steel section. The car is registered in California as a 1929, while the body is clearly a 1928, identifiable by the lack of exterior door handles and the original parking brake mounting hole in the floor to the left of the steering column.
I would like to see this car go to a good home with someone who appreciates these cars. Asking $17,000 OBO. If the ad is still up, it is still available.
