Watercolor Octopus is a new alternative indie rock group forming in north Vallejo with the intent to write, record, and perform original music (and some covers).
Founding members and principal songwriters, John and Schad, are looking to assemble a group of musicians who understand and value collaboration in a group and who want to help create songs with integrity that can, hopefully, bring some joy to some people in this increasingly depressing world.
We have a small handful of rough home demos in a Google Drive folder that we'll share with applicants to give them an idea of our style, with the note that our style will shift as the band grows and everyone adds their voice to each song.
We are in our 40s and looking for folks in the range of 30-50 with the hope that the range will put our personal life schedules a little more in alignment, making getting together for rehearsals and gigs a little easier for everyone. But we're flexible on this for the right musicians and personalities. Ultimately, we would love it if the group not only enjoyed playing music together, but also enjoyed spending time together outside of practice and gigs since a group of friends is going to have better chemistry than a group of relative strangers who can't stand each other.
We have a rehearsal space in north Vallejo, with plans to refurbish and renovate in the coming years to maximize comfort and allow us to record and even live stream rehearsals or online-only performances.
**Our main priority at the moment is finding a bassist** so that we can begin to build the rhythmic foundations the group (rhythm guitar, bass, drums), rehearsing an initial "set list" of at least 10 songs, to start, and adding more as we get those under our collective belt.
After the core three have at least those 10 songs locked down, we'll be looking to add a dedicated keyboardist, a lead guitarist, and -- arguably the lynchpin of the group -- someone we're calling a "super-utility" player who is comfortable tackling various instruments across our catalog to add those special touches to each song; extra keys here, a third guitar there, percussion, harmonica, sitar, banjo, saxophone, just whatever you can play and/or are willing to learn enough to add something extra to a tune.
At the end of the day, we want everyone involved to feel ownership of the group and to feel free to express themselves on their instruments while serving each song in the best way possible. We aim to rehearse at least once per week, preferably on Fridays-Sundays, but weekday evening rehearsals are on the table since everyone's schedules will vary.
Please note that if you aren't a bassist, you are more than welcome to contact us, but we won't be auditioning anyone until we've found a bassist, so it will likely be several weeks or months before we move on to the next round of auditions for keys, guitar, etc.
