History and Description
A Simply Beautiful Bench
At the turn of the 20th Century Gustav Stickley wrote concerning the fundamentals of his furniture design, "For the single word 'beauty’ there should be substituted ‘the beauty of simplicity.’"
The 6th Edition of the Stickley Limited Production Collector Series celebrates his art with the re-issue of this Simply Beautiful Bench originally designed by Gustav Stickley circa 1901.
Gustav’s earliest Craftsman designs reflected his desire to reduce a piece to its simplest form. This is clearly exposed in this early bench by using unadorned vertical and horizontal members joined by pinned through mortise and tenon joinery. The leather seat firmly secured with round tacks allow decoration and usefulness to exist hand in hand. The lower stretcher is secured in place with a keyed mortise and tenon joint. In this re-issue, the post construction is being faithful to the Gustav original by the use of a solid 2" thick wood post.
Available today, and only for one year, through December 31, 2005 in solid quartersawn White Oak or Wild Black Cherry in a limited choice of leathers. Brass nail head trim is standard. A Limited Production Collector Medallion will be placed on each piece.
Leather Choices
Leathers available include Avocado, Byron Umber, Capri Henna, Cordoba Forest and Wyatt's Boot. No other covers are available on this bench."
