Specialized's flagship mountain bike from the early days of high-end 29ers, this S-Works Epic Carbon FSR is a remarkably clean, low-mileage example finished in beautiful raw clear-coated carbon. The frame is in excellent condition, the suspension feels great, and the bike has clearly been well cared for. Everything works exactly as it should and it's ready for the trail.
The Epic helped define modern cross-country racing by combining Specialized's efficient FSR suspension with the Brain inertia valve, which stays firm while pedaling and automatically opens over bumps. It competed directly with bikes like the Trek Superfly 100, Cannondale Scalpel, and Scott Spark, becoming one of the benchmark XC race bikes of its generation. This wasn't simply another carbon mountain bike. It was Specialized's flagship 22lb race machine, retailing for just under $10,000 before tax, (roughly $13,000-14,000 in today's dollars.)
Today's equivalent: an S-Works Epic with a similar level of equipment costs well over $12,000.
To put that in perspective, this wasn't just an expensive mountain bike. It was Specialized's flagship cross-country race bike, aimed at World Cup racers and riders who wanted the very best available.
• FACT 11m carbon was Specialized's highest-grade production carbon at the time.
• The Roval Control SL carbon wheels alone were roughly a $2,000-2,400 wheelset if purchased separately.
• The complete XTR M980 groupset was Shimano's flagship mechanical drivetrain and is still regarded as one of the best mechanical groups ever produced.
• At approximately 22 pounds, this was one of the lightest production full-suspension 29ers available in 2012.
Despite its race pedigree, the Epic is surprisingly versatile. It climbs exceptionally well, accelerates quickly, and still feels composed on technical descents. Riders looking for a fast trail bike rather than a long-travel enduro rig often discover that the Epic strikes a sweet balance between efficiency and capability.
The build is equally impressive: complete Shimano XTR 2x10 speed drivetrain including XTR shifters, derailleurs, cassette, chain and hydraulic disc brakes. An S-Works carbon crank with SRAM XX 38/26t chainrings is paired with an 11-36t XTR cassette. Suspension consists of a RockShox SID Brain World Cup fork with carbon crown and a Fox Brain rear shock. The bike rolls on a premium Roval Control SL carbon 29" wheelset, which alone retailed for around $2,000 when new. A PNW dropper post, Specialized carbon handlebar, and Phenom saddle complete the build.
As a bike mechanic, I went through the bike carefully to make sure everything works exactly as it should. Shifting is crisp, brakes are properly adjusted, bearings are smooth, and the bike has been fully tuned. It needs nothing and is ready to ride.
Large frame fits riders approximately 5'10" to 6'1".
I collect and restore vintage bikes, and I enjoy bringing gently used more recent models back to like-new condition. It’s always rewarding to see them back on the road, helping people stay active and reduce car use. I also offer repairs and tune-ups for the bikes I sell - please check out my Instagram - sfbikemarket.
