Highly collectible and great for heirloom or flipping/arbitrage.
In 1968 the Olympics were held in Mexico City and in 1970, the 9th World Cup Soccer Series was held in Mexico. (You know how it works: bread and circuses for the plebes while economic shenanigans take place behind the scenes.)
During that time, the government organized a campaign to showcase Mexican art for the international market. A specialty item from this period was 'Alpaca Silver' jewelry/trinket box. Even though it's called 'Alpaca Silver' the metal is actually not silver but an alloy of zinc, copper, and nickel. It's also called 'German Silver' but keep in mind, it contains no actual silver (Ag). Value is estimated on comparable market of between $350-$700 and this box is considered to be 'Large'. Some listings will state 'mother of pearl' but that is incorrect. The decorative shell is abalone which alone, due to the highly restricted and endangered status, makes this box a rarity. So, condition, scarcity, artistic value, and historical context add up.
Feel free to make an offer but be respectful.
These are highly sought after and if you look online, you'll find a range of items in a variety of shapes.
