The original Mini was one of the great acts of automotive defiance. In 1959, designer Alec Issigonis proved that a small car didn't have to feel small inside, creating an engineering icon by challenging practically every convention of its day.More than six decades later, the 2022 MINI Cooper Countryman is tackling a rather different problem: how do you build a genuinely useful family crossover without becoming just another forgettable box on wheels?The answer, apparently, involves a healthy disregard for conventional SUV design.Finished in White Silver Metallic, this Countryman has a particularly sharp interpretation of MINI's signature two-tone styling. The paint isn't quite white and isn't quite silver, shifting between the two depending on the light. A contrasting black roof, black mirror caps, Pair Spoke alloy wheels, and roof rails give it a distinctly European appearance.The upright windshield, short overhangs, and unmistakable round headlights are all familiar MINI design cues, but the Countryman carries them on a more substantial body with the proportions and presence of a proper crossover. It looks deliberately different because it is.Beneath that distinctive sheet metal is some serious BMW Group engineering. The F60-generation Countryman shares its underlying architecture with BMW's compact front-wheel-drive models, giving it a sophisticated mechanical foundation beneath the playful styling. Power comes from a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine producing 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch automatic transmission.Three cylinders may sound unconventional in a crossover, but unconventional engineering has been part of MINI's identity since the beginning. The turbocharger provides useful low-speed torque, while the dual-clutch transmission gives the powertrain a more direct mechanical character than the continuously variable transmissions found in many competing vehicles. This isn't the high-output Cooper S, nor is it pretending to be. It's a compact European crossover engineered around efficiency, maneuverability, and a driving experience with some personality left in it.The cabin might be the most compelling argument for choosing a MINI over something more predictable. Where most manufacturers have settled on variations of the same horizontal dashboard, MINI continues to embrace the circular center display, distinctive switchgear, and cockpit-like arrangement that have become part of its identity.There's something refreshingly mechanical about the presentation, even with an 8.8-inch touchscreen and modern digital instrument cluster. Carbon Black leatherette upholstery, Piano Black interior surfaces, and a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel give the cabin a purposeful appearance without losing the quirky details that distinguish the brand.And this particular Countryman was ordered with equipment that makes a meaningful difference. The panoramic glass roof opens up the cabin visually, heated front seats take the edge off cold mornings, and Comfort Access eliminates the familiar routine of searching for keys.A power-operated liftgate, automatic climate control, LED headlights, LED fog lights, reversing camera, rear parking sensors, and MINI's Driving Assistant technology round out a well-considered collection of features. The MINI Excitement Package adds another layer of character through its ambient lighting details, because apparently even the interior lighting needed a personality.Then there's the part that makes the Countryman more than a fashion statement: the rear seats actually accommodate adults. The sliding, reclining rear bench allows the cabin to adapt to passengers or cargo, and the split-folding seatbacks make the load area far more useful than the MINI badge might lead you to expect. It's clever packaging, just on a much larger scale than the original Mini ever attempted.There's an interesting contradiction at the heart of the Countryman. It borrows the unmistakable personality of one of the smallest and most recognizable cars ever built, then wraps it around the space, technology, and practicality buyers expect from a modern crossover.It isn't the purest expression of the original Mini philosophy, but perhaps that's what makes it interesting. The brand has changed, the cars have grown, and the engineering has evolved considerably.What hasn't changed is the conviction that a car can have a personality without sacrificing its usefulness.And in a parking lot full of crossovers that seem to have been designed by the same committee, that still counts for something.
