There are set dances, céilí dances, kitchen dances, sean-nós dancing and old-style step dancing. Each tradition has its own rhythms, movements, history and character.
It is rare to have the opportunity to explore all of these traditions in one class.
Over seven Tuesdays, we will sample the many flavors of Irish dance—a dance menu and a taste of Ireland. We will learn foundational steps and movements, listen to the different rhythms and discover how each tradition fits into the larger world of Irish music and dance.
We will explore:
◈ Old-style step dancing
◈ Céilí dances, including the Harvest Time Jig, Siege of Carrick, Siege of Ennis and Haymakers Jig
◈ Kitchen dances, including a two-hand hornpipe
◈ Sean-nós reels
◈ Set dancing, including the Claddagh Set
No previous dance experience is needed, and you do not need a partner. Come with comfortable shoes, curiosity and a willingness to give it a try.
