We understand this ad contains more info than average and it may be a lot to read and process, but we have found that is the best way to save everyone's time and filter for the best possible fit. Please take the time to read this ad before responding; we want to know about you and if we would be a good fit before meeting in person. We're more likely to connect and respond if we get a thoughtful response from interested people.
We are seeking queer, COVID cautious, individual, couple, or platonic life mates who would like to rent out two spacious bedrooms on the 2nd floor of our Richmond home (~SE 41st between Powell and Division) in January 2027 *some flexibility available on move-in date. We love animals but can only consider dogs on a case-by-case basis and no cats right now. We’re a queer, neurodivergent, married non-monogamous couple who have been together for almost 13 years. We think of ourselves as relatively tidy, silly, thoughtful, and communicative. We have a precious, silly, sensitive cat-baby named Penne. We have owned the home for many years, have rented to many roommates, and we really value community. We're hoping to find somebody(s) who we mesh well with so that the household feels like a community space and not just renting to a stranger.
There's a badass garden with tons of native plants and some tasty edibles peppered in.
We give priority to queer/trans folks. We’re sex positive, fat positive, and whore positive. Know that Black Lives Matter, sex work is work, capitalism is systematic exploitation and oppression made law, disability comes in many forms but ableism affects us all, trans people are as beautiful as they are diverse, and we are all part of the same living system that is our planet.
What does community look like to you? What do you need from your home space and home community?
For us we like to have check ins about what's going on in our day to day. We like having house meetings to check in and where we also put on some music and do a deep cleaning party. Want to throw down on a meal and share the labor and cost and have leftovers for the work week, or incorporate some garden veg? Want to find a cute gay TV show to watch together? Movie nights or video/board games to chill out? Parallel art making/reading books/journaling time in the garden or other common spaces? These are some things we enjoy doing.
Quantitative deets:
The second floor is available on a 1-year lease with hopes to extend long-term with a good fit, $1300/month for both rooms including ALL utilities. We ask for first and last month's rent (willing to collect last month on a payment plan if necessary), and a $400 security deposit. $3000 total move-in cost. EV charging for an additional cost.
About the bedrooms: On the second floor, 14 steps up, about 12x13’, a decent sized closet. The bedrooms have hardwood floors that were refinished in 2022, soft green colored walls with wood trim, and a pair of windows. The second floor also has a large storage closet and hallway space for more of your belongings. There is also plenty of storage in the basement for camping gear and such. Ample and safe street parking
There is one bathroom on the main floor and another full bathroom in the basement that has a large soaking tub. All bathrooms and common spaces are shared by the entire household. There is also a second refrigerator, guest room/den in the basement, 12 steps down from the main floor that’s also considered common space. Our last roommates opted to just have the basement fridge to themselves rather than split both, but we understand that may not suit everyone and can be renegotiated.
About each of us:
D, 39, they/them, queer, nonbinary, transfeminine, AuDHD, dynamically disabled. I have a hybrid job and occasionally work from home in the living room. I recently transitioned out of a career in community mental health, but that will always be a part of who I am. I'm a huge native plant/ecology/garden nerd and a variety of activities around this make up most of my hobbies/recreation. Will infodump when welcome, but a great listener and considerate of others’ energy. Total cat mom. Due to my neurotype and some chronic health conditions, I’m frequently low spoons and a homebody, even though I actually have pretty high social needs and motivation. I really love to connect with housemates and my wider community when I can. I’d love to build an entirely different society premised on valuing, respecting, and celebrating all life, human and nonhuman if you’re into that. I'm also passionate about music and you can find me regularly listening to music and audiobooks. I developed Long COVID in 2024 and have recovered from most of the effects, but one lasting effect has been sensitivity to airborne irritants, so I’m really sensitive to strong smells like fried food or fragranced household or personal products.
L, 38, she/they, silly person, house mom vibes with ADHD sprinkles on top. I love nesting at home and making it as cozy as can be. I have celiac disease so GF cooking is my jam, and I'm always curious and excited to try a new recipe. For money, I work as a Paraeducator at the neighborhood high school in an intensive skills classroom, 8AM-4PM M-F. In my limited free time I can be found: fawning over our cat, Penne, hiking/communing with nature, reading/listening to things, spending time with my friends and partners, making art, doing some dance moves or yoga. I enjoy talking about mental health, self care practices, social justice and media. I thrive best by having community with folks in and out of the household, and also need a lot of alone time to recharge after working in an overstimulating environment during the week. So some days I'll feel social and others I need to put on my headphones and have quiet time/keep more to myself.
We work day shifts so we prefer someone that isn't going to be making noise late at night and try to keep quiet hours 11pm-8am. More generally, this is not a home for drinkers or partiers.
Penne, 6, cat, tender little love nugget. She can be shy, but warms up to people quickly and loves scritches, slow blinks, being brushed, play time, and occasionally being held. She is not free-roaming but gets regular outside time when we are home and can keep an eye out. Penne was previously bullied by other cats, so any potential new pet needs to have been previously socialized with cats and willing to work through a controlled introduction process. After many years of difficult and unsuccessful integration attempts with other cats, we’ve decided not to try again for now. She has done particularly well with small dogs, and will most likely do well with another animal that is sociable but not pushy or all up in her space.
Shared kitchen: We aim to clean up the kitchen after each use and communicate if cleanup might take a little longer than normal for any reason. We try not to leave dirty dishes for more than 24 hours and ask that you do the same. We have a dishwasher and dish rack and take turns emptying both so nobody has to do it all the time. We’re a moderately clean household (we’re working adults with ADHD, so we do our best) and seek living with people who share the same standards, keeping shared spaces in a usable state.
Our ask for housemates:
Please be taking some amount of COVID precautions, have assertive communication skills, know your capacity and keep commitments, and have ability to set and respect boundaries. Please be able to provide at least personal 2 references, preferably from folks you have recently lived with, but are willing to accept talking to a landlord. We will do our best to be open about our feelings and expectations, and be flexible as to meet you in the middle. With new housemates, we like to hold monthly house meetings to establish good communication and collaborative problem-solving. The intentions are to check in on house needs, how everyone is doing mentally, emotionally, how we can support each other, calendar/plan for shared spaces/social events and just connect with each other. We have historically chosen chore assignments and ask that you follow through with completing some chores regularly, and deep cleaning when needed.
We look forward to meeting you, sharing space, and moments of our lives together. <3
