Engine & Components Painter Job Description:
An engine painter is a specialized automotive technician who focuses on painting and refinishing engine components, such as cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and exhaust systems, to restore appearance and protect against corrosion. This role is often part of a larger body shop or engine repair facility.
Core Responsibilities:
Surface Preparation: Clean and prepare engine parts using methods such as sanding, sandblasting, hydro-blasting, or chemical etching to ensure proper paint adhesion.
Rust & Contaminant Removal: Eliminate rust, oil, grease, and debris from surfaces before painting.
Body Filler & Repair: Fill small dents, scratches, or imperfections with body filler and sand smooth.
Paint Mixing & Application: Mix paints to match OEM specifications, apply primer, and use spray guns or airbrushes to apply finish coats.
Touch-Ups & Repairs: Perform spot repairs and touch-ups on defective painted areas.
Drying & Curing: Use infrared or high-heat lamps to speed up drying processes.
Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and clean spray guns, air compressors, and other tools.
Safety Compliance: Follow all safety and health regulations when handling hazardous materials.
Inventory & Waste Management: Order supplies, maintain paint inventory, and dispose of hazardous/non-hazardous waste properly.
Skills & Qualifications:
Proficiency with spray guns, air compressors, power tools, and paint mixing equipment.
Strong attention to detail and ability to match colors precisely.
Knowledge of automotive body repair processes and engine component materials.
Experience with automotive painting standards and OEM color charts.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-conscious environment.
Typical Work Environment:
Engine painters work in automotive body shops, engine repair facilities, or industrial settings. They may work on both large-scale engine rebuilds and smaller touch-up jobs, often in a team with other body techs, preppers, and estimators.
