The Farrier Occupational Certificate Training program is designed to give students hands-on experience in trimming and horseshoeing, as well as familiarizing students with the principles and theories of blacksmith to build shoes and trimming and balancing horses according to their conformation and use. The College’s certificate program is comparable to private horseshoeing school programs.
Students in the Farrier program will spend lab time trimming and shoeing horses, learning how to work safely around horses and studying the art of horseshoeing. Students also receive instruction in equine behavior, entrepreneurial business management, and interpersonal communication. This is a eight-week program, maximum class size is 12 students.
Students will be able to:
Apply safe work practices for humans working around horses;
Demonstrate correct applications of selected tools and equipment used in equine industry;
Differentiate between types and uses of horses and determine the appropriate trim or shoes required;
Apply the concepts of hoof balance, foot biomechanics, and physiological shoeing;
Effectively communicate with clients;
Schedule clients and manage their own business;
Master the art of hoof trimming and shoe application to be able to apply for and participate in the American Farriers Association Certification.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that overall employment of animal care and service workers will grow 16% through 2028, which is more than the 5% projected growth rate for all occupations. The BLS doesn't break out separate statistics for farriers. However, there are more than seven million horses in the United States alone, and each horse requires foot care several times a year.

We recommend the following safety equipment and tools:
Hard Toe Shoes or Boots (no open-toe shoes allowed at the farm/ranch)
Safety Glasses
Gloves (preferably leather)
Tool Box for Farrier Tools (tools will be distributed on the 2nd day of class at the farm)
Thermos or Bottle (for drinking water or similar)
NOTE: Course fee includes Farrier Tool Kit, and required textbooks: Principles of Horseshoeing P3, and Elements of Farrier Science
Farrier Tool Kit includes: Farrier Apron, Nippers, Rasp, Rasp Handles, Hoof Knife, Hoof Gage, Dividers, Nailing Hammer, Turning Hammer, Nail Puller, Shoe Puller, Tongs, and Pritchel
