This amethyst cluster features a dense formation of small, tightly packed, interlocking crystal points showing characteristic pyramidal terminations. This cluster began millions of years ago inside an underground gas bubble trapped within cooling, ancient volcanic lava flows (basalt). As the fluid cooled down and pressure shifted, the silica precipitated out, slowly growing the hexagonal quartz points inward from the edges of the pocket. Trace amounts of iron impurities were incorporated into the growing quartz lattice. Natural, low-level gamma radiation from the surrounding host rocks interacted with these iron atoms over millennia, altering their electrons and giving the crystals their unique light-purple coloration. Most likely origin is Inner Mongolia, China, Minas Gerais, Brazil, or Patagonia, Argentina.
