2001 Modulus custom Flea 4-string bass with Bartolini 18V system and extra jazz pickup
Metallic blue with white pearloid pick guard
Serial number: 010421
Original owner. This was built for me in-house at Modulus (I actually picked it up at their Novato factory), so everything you see was done by Modulus, at Modulus. I’m embarrassed to say I never played this that much as I moved back to piano, so it’s in absolutely beautiful, like-new condition and has always been kept in a non-smoking home.
I requested two customizations: (1) I had them add an additional Jazz pickup to provide a much more versatile tone and sound (and corresponding Bartolini 18V electronics), and (2) No “Flea” signature on the headstock. It also has strap-locks, so I must’ve also had them put those on. I really just loved the bass (not Flea, per se), and to this day just think it’s about the most beautiful thing in the world.
I don’t have the specifics on the Bartolini pickups, these were simply selected by Modulus. (I do have some old notes that say the MM is an 58MMX, the Jazz an 9J4, and the preamp the NTMB, but really don’t quote me on that.) In the end, these were the standard Bartolini pickups and electronics Modulus was customarily using in their basses at that time.
• Knob layout: Volume, Blend, Mid, stacked Bass/Treble.
• The pick guard is new (as the original had faded), and I also have a second cream pearloid pick guard I had made…so I’m including that as well. It actually has a nice retro vibe.
To my eyes, there are only two very, very minor imperfections: On the bottom edge between the knobs and input, and on the rear above the electronics cover (both shown in pics). The bass is otherwise in just flawless condition.
Including…
• Original Modulus hardshell case (a few scuffs on the outside, absolutely pristine inside)
• Modulus owner’s manual and warranty card
• Leather strap with StrapLocks
• Extra pick guard in cream pearloid
