The 3mm wear layer is what separates this from the cheap engineered floors.
Most engineered flooring sold at big box stores runs a 0.6mm to 1mm veneer. That is thinner than a credit card. Scratch through it and there is nothing underneath but plywood, and there is no fixing it. You replace the floor.
This one carries a 3mm wear layer of real hard maple, which means it can be sanded and refinished down the road just like a solid floor. You are buying 20 plus years out of this floor, not 8. At $2.69 a square foot, you are paying less than most one-coat veneer product costs and getting several times the usable wood.
Hard maple is also one of the densest domestic species milled for flooring, so it takes daily traffic without denting the way softer imports do. And because this is factory finished, you get an even color. Maple is famously difficult to stain on site because the tight grain blotches and goes splotchy. The factory finish on this Onyx color is uniform board to board, which is a look you cannot reliably reproduce with a site finish.

That flexibility is the other reason engineered exists. If you have a slab, a basement, or heated floors, this is your option and solid hardwood is not.
