Yes, We Install Water Heaters
YOU’VE GOT 99 PROBLEMS AND A LEAKY WATER HEATER SHOULDN’T BE ONE OF THEM
Are You Ready for the Ban on Gas and Electric Water Heaters?
Electric Water Heater Ban
Under the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) national efficiency standards, electric storage tank water heaters with capacities over 35 gallons (including 50-gallon units) manufactured for sale in the U.S. will be required to use highly efficient heat pump technology after May 6, 2029.
Gas Water Heater Ban
California is phasing out the sale of gas-powered water heaters, effectively requiring zero-emission alternatives, such as heat pump water heaters, for new and replacement installations statewide by 2030. We don’t have an exact date because they are constantly trying to speed it up. The Bay Area ban takes place in January 2027. January 2026 was the scheduled date to ban gas water heaters in homes in LA, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties, but this was delayed by the Trump Administration's threat of litigation.
Heat Pump Water Heaters are Not New
This is very old technology. Your refrigerator and freezer at home are heat pumps. It takes the heat out of the refrigerator and puts it into the home. A heat pump water heater typically extracts heat from the garage and transfers it to the water heater, resulting in about 500% efficiency compared to an electric heater (which is 100% efficient).

Common Heat Pump Water Heater Questions:
• Is a Heat Pump Water Heater Cheaper to Operate? An ENERGY STAR-certified heat pump water heater is typically at least 3-5 times more efficient than standard electric and gas models. For a family of four, you can anticipate saving $100-$300 a year versus a comparable gas water heater and an estimated $550 a year versus electric only. Over the course of the water heater’s lifetime, that amounts to savings of $1500 to over $8000.
• Why must the stand be lowered? The Heat Pump portion of the heater is mounted on top of the tank (see the picture). We must have room to service the filter and top controls.
• Why must the room be at least 1000 cubic feet? Heat pumps pull heat from the surrounding air, and the air passing over the evaporator coil on top of the heater will be 2-4 degrees cooler than the ambient air. We must have enough heat energy in the room to heat the water. Some kits allow ducting to get the air from the attic or outside if the room isn’t large enough.
• Can the Heat Pump Water Heater be installed outside? No, it isn’t built to be weather-tight; perhaps more models in the future will be shaped like an outside air conditioner (condenser). There are a couple of foreign units on the market, but they will not have factory support, and getting parts in the event of a breakdown might not be possible.
• Why install a drain pan? The manufacturer states that a drain pan is required if any water damage could occur from a leak in the tank, therefore it is a code requirement.
• Why install a mixing valve? The water stored in the tank will be at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit, and this can cause burns; therefore, the State of California has mandated a mixing valve for safety with a 120 degree output.
• Why 65 gallons? It seems too large. The tank is larger because the recovery time is slower with the Heat Pump water heater versus a gas water heater.
• How long does a heat pump water heater last? Heat Pump water heaters are typically cited as lasting between 13-15 years.
• Why must an Expansion tank be installed? Because the new water meters that have been and are being installed contain a check valve to prevent reverse flow into the city main. This means that your hot water system is a closed-loop system, and when the water heats up, it will increase in pressure, which can cause problems. The expansion tank allows the water to expand into it rather than raise the pressure of the house water supply.
• Will it work during cold spells in the winter? Yes, it will work just fine. It doesn’t get cold enough here in Southern California to cause problems. We work on and install heat pumps for home and business heating all the time and have for decades.
