French Cousances Cast Iron Fireplace Fireback Diana/Luna Louis XV Design. This is an identifiable French foundry casting, with the Cousances attribution.
The design closely corresponds to a documented 18th-century French Diana/Luna fireback, although the exact production date of this particular Cousances casting has not been established, it is likely the 1850’s. It is marked “Cousances”and bears a raised casting/pattern number 82-53-5. Cousances, an historic French foundry, was later acquired by Le Creuset. Substantial original iron casting with excellent decorative leaf and attractive aged patina. Surface oxidation and wear consistent with age; see photos for condition.
Beautiful and extremely substantial French cast-iron fireback, an unusual statement piece for a fireplace, historic home, architectural installation or French/European antiques collection.
