Whalefilm is a custom fabrication and scenic production company seeking a CNC Operator Apprentice / Junior CNC Operator to join our fabrication team.
This is a hands-on training position working directly with our Lead CNC Operator. We’re looking for someone who is mechanically inclined, comfortable working with computers and fabrication equipment, and interested in developing into a fully independent CNC operator.
Previous CNC experience is preferred, but extensive CNC programming experience is not required. We are willing to train the right person.
What You’ll Learn & Do
Train directly under our Lead CNC Operator
Operate our Biesse CNC router
Learn proper CNC setup and safe machine operation
Load and prepare materials for machining
Learn CNC tooling, bit selection and tool changes
Learn how to prepare and nest files for CNC production
Assist with machine setup and job changeovers
Read shop drawings and production files
Check finished parts for accuracy and quality
Learn basic CNC troubleshooting
Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance
Maintain an organized CNC work area
Assist the fabrication department as needed
What We’re Looking For
Mechanical aptitude and strong attention to detail
Comfortable working with computers and learning new software
Ability to read measurements accurately
Experience with woodworking, cabinetry, millwork, scenic fabrication or CNC equipment is a plus
Experience with Biesse, B_SOLID, EnRoute or other CNC nesting software is a strong plus
Ability to safely lift and handle sheet goods and fabrication materials
Dependable and willing to learn
Able to work independently after completing training
Career Progression
The goal of this position is to develop the successful candidate into an independent CNC Operator capable of running production without direct supervision.
Training will initially take place alongside our Lead CNC Operator. As proficiency increases, the position is expected to transition into a swing-shift CNC role, approximately 2:00 PM–10:30 PM, based on production needs.
Advancement and compensation growth will be based on demonstrated proficiency in CNC operation, setup, nesting, troubleshooting and independent production.
