No! Paying lawmakers won't attract new talent. It's a ruse.
It will only further feed the lawmakers we already entrench in Santa Fe. And, it's just a start. Once they see they get paid, they will submit bills and/or riders to bills to increase this initial pay. It's called, "Incrementalism". Feed the beast and it grows.
Let's be honest here. The pay being proposed is not going to give the average citizen, sans attachment to the Democrat party, the means to run for office. (I say Democrat because this is a one party state. The only role Republicans play in New Mexico is to bring home the bacon for the folks they represent and to limit the opposing, Democratic party. Much like the Washington Generals to the Globe Trotters. They always lose.) Those that run for office have support from other than their individual paycheck or the proposed paycheck at stake. They have spouses, family members, partnerships, personal relationships, business relationships, etc.
Last thought; the commercial now running that tries to turn the table stating, "Make them live on what we, the average citizen lives on." Then to turn around and say, Support Amendment 4. What a RUSE! They are most likely living well now. The economy be damned. These people got there without mandatory pay. And, will continue to do so.
Are we, the New Mexico citizenry, lemmings? I finish as I started, vote NO!
p.s. If you have a beef with this, reply! Don't shut it down. This is the USA. Can we not have opposing opinions? Or, are we truly a monolithic thought, ONE Party state with speech police?
