The BC-5000/BC-10000 can be used with the included PC sync cord and each unit also has a built in slave trigger
The BC-5000 uses a standard 100 Watt light bulb as a modeling/focusing light. The output of the modeling light is proportional to the power setting of the flash. The modeling light also goes out when the flash is triggered and comes back on when the flash has recycled (recycling is very fast).
At full power it has a guide number of 226 at ISO 200 (f/22 at 10 feet) (290 for the BC -10000 f/29 at 10 feet)
The reflector has a nice broad light spread. The modeling light-bulb acts to shield the direct light from the tube so you get a softer effect with the light coming off the satin reflector (much like a Beauty Dish Reflector). There is also a receiver for using umbrellas.
From Paul Buff literature:
The White Lightning WL 5,000 unit is a extremely precise, high power electronic photoflash. It is designed for professional studio use, and is well-suited for demanding location usage due to its very compact, yet highly durable construction. The WL 5,000 delivers 130 true watt seconds of energy per flash (BC- 10000 260 watt seconds). The flash units emit light at a color temperature of approximately 5500º Kelvin, balanced for correct “daylight” exposure. The provided 100 watt modeling lamp is intended for scene preview, focusing and aperture calculations rather than for exposure.
