Antique Japanese tansu, plain wood front (unlacquered, natural stained finish), configured with three drawers across the top row and two full-width drawers below. Round black iron lock plates with keyholes on the top-center and lower-center drawers, simple swing-bail iron pulls on the remaining drawers, iron corner brackets. Wood shows natural grain and patina consistent with age; wood species not confirmed.
traditional Japanese two-section merchant or clothing chest (isho-tansu or funa-tansu style), featuring distinctive heavy black iron hardware, lock plates (kanagu), and flush drop-handles characteristic of the late Edo to Meiji periods.
This piece is quite comparable to another Meiji-period example — a Late 19th century dark wood tansu with three top drawers, two full-width drawers below, and hand-wrought iron hardware sold in a similar configuration. Same provenance as the other two pieces — brought from Japan circa 1970.
