THE GENERAL WHO WOULD NOT FIRE
He Died for His Country—Not for Its Rulers.
A novel by Khosrow Motalaby
What happens to a general who refuses to shed his own people’s blood?
During Iran’s 1979 Revolution, General Kamal Nezami commanded the army in Qom, one of the country’s most important religious cities. Trained in the United States and appointed by the Shah, Kamal faced growing unrest and the responsibility of keeping his city from becoming a battlefield.
Working with the prominent religious leader Ayatollah Shariatmadari, he helped maintain calm. According to his family’s account, no one was killed under his command in Qom. Some in the army considered him a turncoat; others saw him as a hero who protected their lives.
His restraint did not save him. After the revolution, Kamal was arrested. His first trial resulted in a five-year prison sentence. A second trial brought a death sentence, and he was executed a few months later.
Based on the life of the author’s brother-in-law, this moving novel tells Kamal’s story alongside that of his wife, Guity, and their daughters, Susan and Katy—who were in the United States when their father was arrested.
A story of courage, conscience, and a family’s enduring loss, The General Who Would Not Fire asks: When obedience demands bloodshed, what does it mean to serve your country?
