Flatbed CDL Driver Job Description
A Flatbed CDL Driver transports freight using a flatbed tractor-trailer while ensuring loads are safely secured, protected, and delivered on schedule. This position requires a valid Commercial Driver's License, strong knowledge of cargo securement, and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Operate a flatbed commercial vehicle safely and in compliance with DOT, federal, state, and local regulations.
Transport construction materials, machinery, steel, lumber, and other oversized or irregular freight.
Secure loads using chains, binders, straps, tarps, and edge protectors.
Inspect cargo and securement before departure and throughout the trip.
Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip vehicle inspections.
Plan routes and meet scheduled pickup and delivery times.
Maintain accurate electronic logs, inspection reports, bills of lading, and delivery records.
Communicate professionally with dispatchers, customers, warehouse teams, and job-site personnel.
Follow safety procedures when loading, unloading, tarping, and working around equipment.
Report vehicle defects, cargo damage, delays, accidents, and safety concerns promptly.
Qualifications
Valid Class A CDL with an acceptable driving record.
Flatbed driving experience preferred; training may be provided.
Knowledge of DOT regulations, Hours-of-Service requirements, and cargo-securement standards.
Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing, background checks, and DOT physical examinations.
Ability to read maps, use GPS and electronic logging devices, and complete shipping paperwork.
Strong communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
TWIC card, tanker endorsement, or other credentials may be required depending on the freight.
Physical Requirements
Frequently climb into and out of the cab and onto the trailer.
Lift, pull, and carry straps, chains, binders, tarps, and other equipment.
Lift up to 50-100 pounds, depending on company requirements.
Bend, kneel, reach, balance, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Safely tarp and secure loads at elevated heights.
Work Conditions
This position may involve local, regional, or over-the-road routes; early mornings; nights; weekends; and extended periods away from home. Drivers may work in extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and active construction or industrial environments.
