Summary
Responsible for designing, building, installing, and repairing structures, fixtures, furniture, and other items using different types of materials including wood and steel.
Typical Duties
1. Select materials
2. Work with blueprints or instructions from supervisors
3. Work with materials such as wood, plastic, fiberglass, or drywall
4. Utilize chisels, planes, saws, drills, and sanders to repair and erect structures
5. Join materials with nails, screws, staples, or adhesives,
6. Work on ladders
7. Check work along the way to ensure it's up to code and specifications
8. Use levels, rules, plumb bobs, framing squares to ensure everything is level and secure
9. Build and finish stairs, mantles, and furniture
10. Install and finish cabinets and molding,
11. Remodel homes and businesses,
12. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Workers should be able to: Rate information using personal judgment or standards that can be measured or checked; Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy; Perform a variety of duties which may change often; Use reason and logic; Perform arithmetical operations rapidly and accurately; See detail in objects or drawings and recognize slight differences in shapes or shadings; and picture flat drawings as 3-dimensional objects. Physically, workers must be able to: Work easily and skillfully with hands; Climb and maintain balance on scaffold. See well (naturally or with correction) and distinguish colors; Reach for, handle, and grasp hand tools; Bend, crouch, and work in small places; and lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Completion of apprenticeship program desired.
