I recently once again had dinner at Mark's Steakhouse in downtown Gainesville and realized something: this place is really pretty much a rip off. The entrees are all twice or three times as expensive for the same kind of meal one can get at any other steakhouse, the staff is pleasant enough but seems intent on getting you in and out as quickly as possible, and God forbid you should ask for a go bag to take home anything you aren't able to finish--every time I have asked, the response just seems grudging. If I am paying $40 for a steak and can't finish it, I think I should be able to save some of it for myself later.
What I think Mark's has done is really quite brilliant: by overpricing everything they suggest that somehow what they are offering is so much better than any other place; otherwise why would you be paying so much for what is really rather ordinary fare?
