Complete Bay Area 9/11 Newspaper Archive — September 11, 2001 through October 11, 2001
An unusually complete collection of 62 original Bay Area newspapers documenting the first 31 days following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, consisting of 31 consecutive issues of the San Francisco Chronicle and 31 consecutive issues of The Argus of Fremont, California.
The newspapers were preserved unopened and unread and provide two contemporaneous perspectives on the events: the regional perspective of the San Francisco Chronicle and the local Fremont/East Bay perspective of The Argus.
The collection is supplemented by two September 2002 San Francisco Chronicle 9/11 anniversary issues and a special September 11, 2002 edition of The Argus, providing retrospective coverage one year after the attacks.
Together, the collection documents not only the attacks themselves, but the rapidly developing events of the first month afterward—including the immediate aftermath, investigation, national response, security changes, economic consequences, developments involving Afghanistan and the beginning of the post-9/11 era—followed by the first-anniversary remembrance and retrospective coverage.
The collection represents a preserved contemporary newspaper archive of one of the most consequential events in modern American history, with particular historical significance as a record of how the September 11 attacks and their aftermath were reported from the San Francisco Bay Area and Fremont/East Bay community.
