I have an antique (circa late 1920's) Indestro No.220 9-Pc. 1/2", 6-Point, Hex Drive Socket Set that is in excellent condition. The set consists of socket sizes 7/8", 3/4", 11/16", 5/8" 9/16" and 1/2"; ratchet; screwdriver bit/drive plug and steel case. The sockets in this set use 1/2" hex drive and have hex (six-point) broachings. The sockets were constructed by machining and cold-broaching, and were then hardened, making them impervious to wear. The band of knurling is coarse enough that it was likely intended to be functional, to allow the socket to be turned by hand.
The overall dimension of the case is 7.2" long by 2.1" deep by 1.1" high. The original finish was black paint. However, a considerable amount of the paint has worn off due to use over the past century. The cover is embossed and features a hinged-end. Manufactured by Indestro, Mfg. Co., Chicago, IL
Indestro was founded back in 1925. In 1935, Indestro was acquired by Duro Manufacturing, also based in Chicago. Duro retained the Indestro name and tool manufacturing processes and encouraged the Indestro division to continue manufacturing private label tools for Sears Roebuck Co. (Sears) and Western Auto (Wizard) in addition to their own brand. Duro and by association, Indestro, closed its doors in 1990 marking the end of both brands.
