2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata — Thoughtfully Upgraded, Exceptionally Well Maintained
Titanium Gray | Approx. 125,000 miles | Clean title | Matching factory hardtop included
The time has come to part with my 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata. I've thoroughly enjoyed owning and developing this car, but circumstances have changed and it's time for someone else to enjoy it.
My goal with this car has always been simple: **build the Mazdaspeed Miata that Mazda should have built in the first place.** That means improving performance, handling, braking, chassis rigidity, and reliability while preserving the balance, character, and everyday usability that make the Miata such a rewarding driver's car. The result is an exceptionally capable and well-rounded roadster. It's equally at home running errands as carving through Colorado canyon roads.
Virtually all modifications use top-quality components from established Miata specialists, particularly Flyin' Miata and Supermiata. The car has been conscientiously maintained, everything works as intended, and it passed Colorado emissions testing in October 2026.
Engine and Performance:
The engine retains its original internals and factory turbocharger, with Flyin' Miata's comprehensive Little Enchilada performance package providing significantly improved throttle response, turbo performance, and power delivery. Flyin' Miata estimates approximately 200 wheel horsepower with this package, although this particular car has not been dyno-tested.
Reliability and temperature management have received particular attention, including a Supermiata coolant reroute and thermostatically controlled oil cooler.
The timing belt and water pump were replaced just a few thousand miles ago, along with the installation of a Super Damper harmonic balancer. The original fuel injectors have been professionally balanced and blueprinted by RC Fuel Injection. I've exclusively used Mobil 1 full synthetic engine oil during my ownership.
**Engine and performance upgrades:**
- Flyin' Miata Little Enchilada performance package
- ATI Super Damper harmonic balancer
- Supermiata coolant reroute with Flyin' Miata turbo connection kit
- Thermostatically controlled engine oil cooler
- RC Fuel Injection serviced and balanced factory injectors
- Radium fuel rail with pressure gauge
- Magnecor ignition wires and NGK coils
- Original turbocharger and factory ECU
Transmission and Drivetrain:
The car has a recently installed Flyin' Miata Stage 1 Happy Meal clutch and lightweight flywheel package with a braided stainless steel clutch line professionally installed by ARK Motorsports.
The original six-speed transmission was replaced by the previous owner with a five-speed manual, which offers an excellent shifting experience. I've further improved the shift feel with a MiataRoadster short shifter and Supermiata shift knob.
The original limited-slip differential and 4.10 final-drive gearing remain in place. Both transmission and differential use Red Line lubricants.
Suspension, Brakes, and Chassis:
This is arguably where the car really shines. The exceptional Supermiata Tecna coilovers, equipped with their street/track spring package, deliver an excellent combination of compliance, control, and precision. They're complemented by adjustable Flyin' Miata sway bars and Supermiata spherical end links. The chassis benefits from Flyin' Miata frame rails, butterfly bracing, upgraded door bushings, and a Hard Dog Ace roll bar. Together, these upgrades contribute to a noticeably more solid, responsive driving experience.
Braking performance has also been substantially upgraded, with four-piston Wilwood front calipers and larger rotors, performance rear rotors and pads, stainless steel lines, and high-performance brake fluid.
**Suspension, wheel, and brake upgrades:**
- Supermiata Tecna coilovers with street/track springs and rear adjuster extensions
- Flyin' Miata adjustable front and rear sway bars
- Supermiata spherical sway bar end links
- Racing Beat front sway bar reinforcement
- 949 Racing 6UL 15x8 lightweight wheels

- StopTech STR600 DOT 4 brake fluid

- Flyin' Miata upgraded door bushings

Exterior and Interior:
The car presents well for its age, with a straight body and no significant accident history—Carfax available. The Titanium Gray paint retains a good gloss but has typical age-related imperfections, including stone chips, localized sun fading, and minor blemishes. There are also a few small cracks in the rear bumper.
A premium cloth convertible top from Moss Motors has been professionally installed by Coyote Motors in Boulder. **A matching factory Mazda hardtop is included.**
The interior is in very good condition overall, with normal wear consistent with its age. There is one dashboard crack and a small crack in the driver's door armrest. The driver's seat has been carefully modified with a foam reduction ("foamectomy") for improved support and seating position. A full Flyin' Miata sound-insulation kit helps make the car more pleasant on longer drives.
The audio system has also been substantially upgraded.
**Interior and convenience upgrades:**
- Sony XAV-AX1000 touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay
- Infinity Kappa 6.5-inch door speakers
- Infinity Kappa 5.25-inch rear speakers
- Trunk prewired for a subwoofer
- A-pillar boost gauge
- Flyin' Miata sound-insulation kit

- Flyin' Miata trailer hitch

Condition and Ownership
This car has been developed with an emphasis on quality, durability, and balanced performance rather than simply chasing horsepower numbers. It has been driven and enjoyed, including light track use, and maintained accordingly.
The engine remains internally stock, the original turbocharger is retained, and the car is currently configured around its factory ECU.
It isn't a concours restoration, and I'm not representing it as one. It's a well-cared-for, thoughtfully upgraded driver's car that offers a tremendous amount of performance, character, and enjoyment.
For someone looking for a Mazdaspeed Miata that's already been equipped with many of the most desirable upgrades, this is an opportunity to avoid the expense and effort of building one from scratch.
