Weekend Mentor for a Fun 6 Year Old in Berkeley | $23+ per Hour | About 40 Hours per Month
I’m looking for a few wonderful people in the Berkeley area to spend time with a bright, funny, curious 6 year old, primarily on weekends.
There are about 40 hours per month available, and I am happy to divide those hours among 2 or 3 people. You do not need to be available every weekend or take all of the hours. A consistent Saturday, Sunday, every other weekend, or regular block of weekend time could work well.
This is a fun position for someone who genuinely enjoys kids and would like to become a positive, consistent mentor in a child’s life.
Some days might mean going on an adventure together. Swimming, trampoline parks, playgrounds, museums, amusement parks, hiking, sports, grabbing lunch, exploring somewhere new, or whatever else you both enjoy.
Other days might be spent closer to home building Lego, doing arts and crafts, baking, making forts, trying science experiments, playing games, Minecraft, music, reading, building something, or coming up with a project together.
We would start close to home in Berkeley, and bigger outings would come naturally once trust and familiarity are established.
You might love sports and being outdoors. You might be artistic, creative, musical, into gaming, science, cooking, building things, or something completely different.
What matters most is that you are warm, playful, patient, dependable, engaged, and genuinely enjoy connecting with kids.
Patience is especially important. The right person can stay calm, kind, and steady when plans change, something takes longer than expected, or a child needs extra time and support to regroup. You should be able to handle a challenging moment without becoming frustrated or taking it personally, and then move forward with a fresh start.
He is neurodivergent, imaginative, energetic, very bright, and sometimes very fast. Safety is an important part of the position, particularly during community outings. You need to be attentive, confident, and physically able to move quickly when necessary.
I’m hoping to find someone who is:
• Warm, kind, and genuinely interested in kids
• Playful and able to connect through a child’s interests
• Patient, calm, and emotionally steady
• Creative and willing to come up with things to do together
• Comfortable being silly and having fun
• Firm, confident, and consistent when safety or boundaries matter
• Attentive and safety conscious
• Reliable and responsible
• Comfortable with neurodivergence
• Interested in developing a genuine mentor relationship rather than simply supervising
Students, recent graduates, and others who connect naturally with kids are encouraged to apply.
Experience with children or neurodivergent kids is a plus, but personality, patience, judgment, reliability, and connection matter just as much as your résumé.
Pay and schedule
$23 per hour, paid through a formal payroll agency.
Payroll employment includes applicable benefits and protections such as paid sick leave, workers’ compensation coverage, Social Security and Medicare contributions, and unemployment insurance.
I am also happy to personally supplement the hourly rate for an exceptional fit.
Approximately 40 hours per month are available, primarily on weekends, and those hours can be divided among 2 or 3 people.
Outings and driving
There will eventually be driving involved for activities and outings.
A family car is provided, so you will not need to use your own vehicle. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record are required.
The family covers admission and activity costs for both the child and caregiver while working.
Candidates will need to successfully complete the required Live Scan and background clearance before beginning employment.
Interested?
Please send a little about yourself, your general weekend availability, any experience you have with kids, and some of your hobbies and interests.
I’m hoping to find a few great people with different personalities and interests who can each build their own positive, consistent relationship with him.
