You can use a box spring for this bed.
We used this for my young child (4-9 years old). We did not use a box spring because we had a futon mattress and for young kiddos it is close to the ground (mattress seat would be about 15 inches high).
It's broken down easily to 3 components and easily transported. The base slides onto the posts.
