He is strongly protective of his hens and the space he claims as his own. In a very large mixed flock (like 100+ hens with multiple roosters), he tends to create his own protected territory that other birds have trouble accessing. This can cause some tension in big groups.
However, if he is the only rooster in the flock, he shines. He is an outstanding protector - constantly watchful, excellent at courting his ladies, and fiercely guards the nest from predators or intruders. He puts his hens first and takes excellent care of them. Many owners consider a rooster like this the best they’ve ever had when he’s in the right setup (single-rooster flock)
