Remember the 4th of July weekend power outage? I sure do! That outage killed the studio monitors that I've owned for 20 years.
I'm slightly electronically skilled, so I tried to do a little bit of diagnosing. Both speakers have clean looking circuit boards, no signs of damage or blown components. These were very early releases and have minimal glue, which was a common point of failure over time. However... one transformer has a hole blown through it, the other speaker blows fuses immediately. Both speaker drivers of both units work with an external amplifier. It's plausible that both transformers are blown and it is likely that one or both amplifier chips are blown. I'm not skilled enough to do further diagnosis. There could be other problems.
I tried to find replacement components. I could find Japan amps for $57 with transformers rated for 100v at ApexJr online. I was also able to find transformers for the KRK 6's, which should work but would cut their power output by about 30%.
It's also worth mentioning that I had a mouse infestation about 12 years ago. When I opened the speakers for diagnosing there were a couple mouse turds. You'll probably find a couple more. Like.. maybe a dozen total. Nothing crazy. No bugs. I just want to be very honest about their condition.
