Figured I’d pass this canoe along to someone who’ll put it to use. It’s a 2001 Mad River Explorer 17, Royalex hull, HIN MADHX400PB01. If you know canoes, you already know the Explorer is one of the good ones — steady on the water, carries a pile of gear, and handles Montana rivers without fuss. Royalex boats aren’t made anymore, and folks around here like them because they’re light, quiet, and tough on rocks.
This one’s been used, not babied, but it’s solid. Needs some simple cosmetic work and a little epoxy on the keel, nothing fancy. Once cleaned up, these usually sell around $1,200–$1,400 in this part of the state.
Specs
-- 17’ 1” long
-- 35” beam
-- Royalex hull (green outside, tan ABS core)
-- Aluminum gunwales
-- Cane seats
-- Ash yoke
-- About 65 lbs
-- Shallow‑V hull
-- Plenty of room for camping gear, dogs, or a couple folks and a cooler
Condition
There’s a worn spot along the keel where the outer layer’s rubbed through. Easy fix with G‑Flex and a bit of cloth. Bow and stern have old skid plates that could use a touch‑up. Yoke’s fine, just dry and could use a little sanding and oil. Seats and gunwales are good. No cracks. If you’re handy at all, you can make it look sharp again without spending much.
Why it’s a good boat
Royalex is light, quiet, and doesn’t complain when you bump a rock or slide over a gravel bar. Explorer 17s track well, stay steady with weight in them, and are just plain useful for hunting, fishing, or poking around lakes and rivers. Hard to find these anymore, especially around Helena.
Asking $400 cash or Venmo. Open to reasonable offers. Just trying to get it to someone who’ll use it.
