This is an original restrike of an etching by Auguste Renoir, entitled Le Chapeau Épinglé (Pinning the Hat). This charming etching, from 1894, is the painter Berthe Morisot's daughter, Julie, pinning flowers on her cousin Paulette's broad-brimmed hat. It is one of Renois's most famous works, which he created in several mediums, oils, pastels, lithographs, and this etching.
Original etchings are often numbered and signed. But after a number of prints are made, the original etching can become less sharp and detailed. Any further prints made from it will still be originals, but are no longer numbered and signed. These further prints are called restrikes.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir did not make prints until he was almost fifty years old, after he was an established Impressionist painter renowned for his bathers, landscapes, and portraits of the Parisian leisure class. Between about 1890 and 1908 he made approximately sixty prints.
The etching itself is 4" x 5.5". The frame dimensions are 13" x 15.5"
