Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated, self-directed Forester who takes ownership of their work, stays productive with minimal supervision, and proactively looks to contribute to the team after completing tasks. The ideal candidate may come from a forestry or biological resources background with an understanding of both the technicalities of timber harvesting and the regulatory considerations of managing biological and botanical resources.
The candidate shall balance fieldwork, data analysis, planning, and collaboration with landowners, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams. Tasks may include:
• Reforestation activities and contract administration
• Timber harvest plan writing and layout (e.g. flagging/marking unit boundaries, stream zones)
• NEPA planning, project design, and unit layout on federal projects
• GIS analysis and map making
• Biological and botanical assessments and surveys, including working nights
• Pile/broadcast burn planning and implementation
• Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in forestry, Wildlife Biology, Natural Resources, or a closely related field
• Solid understanding of logging systems, forest ecology, and silvicultural methods
• Knowledge of and experience with biological and botanical surveys and reports relevant to timber harvesting
• Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro, Avenza maps, Microsoft Word and Excel
• Thrives in small team settings where initiative and adaptability are valued over rigid task assignments
• Valid California driver's license and ability to operate 4WD vehicles on rough terrain and while alone at night
• Ability to work in field conditions including steep slopes, uneven ground, variable weather, and remote locations
Preferred Qualifications
• 5+ years of professional experience in forestry or wildlife biology
• Strong familiarity with environmental laws and regulations such as NEPA, ESA, CEQA, and California FPRs
• California Registered Professional Forester license
• Cal Fire Certified Archaeological Surveyor
• Grant writing experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for regulatory and stakeholder correspondence
Compensation & Benefits
The pay range for this position is:
$75,000 – $90,000 per year. Actual placement will depend on qualifications.
