Are you looking for some community at home but not up for living with 17 people in a neglected house where no one unloads the dishwasher? Do you enjoy kids/teens and dogs? Do you crave yard space, a big house with sunlight and a tranquil neighborhood? And (probably most important) are you able to communicate your needs openly but flexibly? Then you might want to join us!
Key basics:
Rent is $780/month plus utilities for a fully private bedroom (~100 sq. ft.), shared bath and shared common space in a group house with our family of two adults and two kids plus one other housemate and two dogs. NOTE: Room is available 12/1, possibly sooner if needed. Year lease very strongly preferred.
More details:
We are three adults (in our 30s, 50s and 60s) and two kids (14 and 17) sharing a good-sized, beautiful house, and we are looking for a new housemate to replace the one who’s moving on to new adventures. Two of us adults are a male and female couple, DC transplants from New England and Wisconsin. Our 17-year-old is a boy who likes reading, hiking, baseball and gaming; our 14-year-old is a girl who loves animals, music, drawing and crafting. Our dog is a 5ish-year-old, mid-sized black mutt who loves snuggles and chew toys and barking at the mail carrier. The third adult/other housemate is a female museum professional who likes reading, catching up on tv shows on the couch, and snuggling with her dog -- a mellow, mid-sized rescue.
Given our set-up, the first and most important requirement for a potential housemate is an affinity for kids/teens, or at least a strong tolerance for them. (And given the animals, allergies probably aren’t well advised either.) Beyond that, we really prize direct communication, flexibility and a healthy sense of humor.
**We do want to flag the obvious, that living with a family will not be right for everyone.** Our kids can be loud and moody, and we have a healthy share of strife in the course of a normal day. That can include sibling arguments, outbursts at unreasonable parents, and targeted whining. For someone who enjoys kids/teens or doesn't mind the chaos of living near them, the upsides usually outweigh the downsides. Our kids can be tremendously silly and fun and thoughtful and kind. But please do think carefully about how this would be for you. We know that not everyone will be happy living in a home that is sometimes less than peaceful.
In a more general sense, we have lived as a group house for the past 17 years and can describe what has worked well so far: a non-smoking, progressive, LGBTQ+-friendly, "green" house (solar panels/compost/etc) that is a mix of introverts and extroverts, less communal than a co-op but with shared kitchen and baths (two and a half baths total), shared cleaning responsibilities, occasional meals together, a few shared staples, but independent lives and privacy when desired. We prefer a vegetarian kitchen, try to limit our use of A/C (but often falter in July), and have strong WiFi but no cable TV (just plenty of streaming). You're also welcome to talk with our former and current housemates.
We've had male and female housemates in the past, with ages ranging from 25 to 62; we are open to any age, gender, background or orientation -- finding the right fit is what matters.
The bedroom for rent is small, but not tiny (12' x 8.5'), has a good size closet, central AC, a ceiling fan, and lots of afternoon sunlight. It also has beautiful hardwood floors and views onto a quiet, tree-lined street. There is a bit of additional storage space in the attic if needed. The pictures are of the room as it has been furnished in the past. Some furniture may be available if you'd like, but also fine if not.
The house is in Crestwood, about a mile north of Mt. Pleasant, just west of Petworth, near 16th and Allison Streets, NW. It is a big, beautiful old rowhouse (on the end of the row) in great condition, with lots of sunny, open communal space and a big, renovated kitchen -- great for sharing. There is also some yard/garden space for anyone with the energy and inclination to make use of it. We're in the process of establishing lots of native pollinators in the yard, plus a raspberry patch and some rhubarb plants. The neighborhood is generally safe, peaceful, and beautiful, and just a 10-minute walk from hiking/biking trails in Rock Creek Park! Being this close to the Park is an incredible joy.
Buses to downtown and Silver Spring run frequently on 16th Street, and the Columbia Heights Metro and area restaurants, stores, library, Farmer's Markets, Super Giant, etc., are about a mile away (5 minutes by bus, 20 minutes walking). The Petworth Yes! Organic Market is about a mile away, along with Timber Pizza, Honeymoon Chicken, Lulabelle's Sweet Shop and more.
Lots of on-street parking.
The room is available as of December 1 (again, possibly earlier if needed) and we strongly prefer a year lease, to minimize transition in the house. Utilities range a lot between seasons, but the average is around $90/month (we can share exact amounts from the past year upon request).
Please email to tell us a bit about yourself if interested. Thanks!
