This play was originally produced at the DC Black Theatre Festival at Howard University's Ira Aldridge Theatre. We are remounting the show with a new cast for an upcoming production in the Washington D.C. area.
This comedic drama follows Brenda, a young widow stepping back into the dating world after loss, encouraged by her free-spirited Aunt Shirley and opposed by her sharp, traditional, and fiercely protective Grandma.
When Brenda believes she’s found “the one” online, generational values collide, and Grandma takes matters into her own hands in ways no one expects.
We are seeking talented, dedicated actors to bring these colorful characters to life in this exciting stage comedy.
FEMALE CHARACTERS
1) "Grandma" - Strong commanding Grandma role. Featured character with emotional depth.
Traditional, witty, spiritually grounded, and not afraid to speak her mind. Deeply protective of her granddaughter and driven by love — even when that love looks like control. Strong stage presence required. (55-65)
2) "Brenda" - a recently widowed woman cautiously reentering the dating world. Intelligent, emotionally layered, and quietly strong, with humor that emerges naturally from life's awkward moments. (25-38) Singing is a plus.
3) "Juanita" - street-smart, magnetic, and high-energy, Juanita plays the dating game like a pro — or so she claims. Beneath her sass and confidence is a woman determined not to lose her edge. Must balance swagger with subtle emotional depth. (27-37)
4) "Aunt Shirley" - recently divorced and re-entering the dating world, Shirley is witty, hopeful, and emotionally exposed beneath her humor. She masks insecurity with charm and bravado. Strong comedic timing with grounded vulnerability required. (42- 48)
MALE CHARACTERS
1) "Michael " - a confident, self assured man who appears emotionally in control but avoids vulnerability. Intelligent, charming without being flashy and accustomed to leading with confidence. Looking for an actor who can convey internal conflict without overplaying charm. (33-43)
2) "Brian" - Michael’s business partner and moral counterbalance. Thoughtful, grounded, and quietly confident, Brian wrestles with faith, temptation, and modern dating pressures. A sincere “good man” searching for something real. Requires emotional honesty and understated strength. (32-38)
3) "Sonny" - Michael's son eager to emulate his father and gets in trouble over his head. (18-25)
4) “Tyrell - Juanita’s confident, charismatic “boy toy.” Physically imposing and in excellent shape. Must be comfortable using physicality in performance, including brief shirtless moments. Strong stage presence, charm, and bold energy required. (33-38)
Target Performance Window: April 2027 and beyond (exact venue and dates TBA).
Initial performance location: Washington, DC area (with potential for expansion).
