Do you like to get on the floor and play with a purpose? Are you looking to build your skills and gain experience in a professional team? Our family is looking for tutors and educational assistants to join our home-based team in South Vancouver!
You must be 19+ and able to legally work in Canada. You also must be willing to be paid directly by the province through Autism Funding and/or a BC online school, a process that can take a few weeks to arrange. Shifts would be of 2-4 hours a week and 1 to 3 shifts a week are available (for a total of 2 to 10 hours / week). We prefer a regular weekly schedule, but there is flexibility to reschedule as needed.
Full post:
We are a busy UBC staff family living in South Vancouver looking for tutors and caregivers to help teach our 9-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter. They are enrolled in a BC Online School (OL) and their educational program will be supervised remotely by a certified teacher, but delivered in-person by tutors and educational assistants.
Our 9-year-old son is autistic and has ADHD. He is good-natured, affectionate and active. He loves building things, doing science kits, playing video games and coding his own games on Scratch. He also likes to play outside (riding his bike, playing soccer, going to a good playground, etc.) but sometimes needs a lot of encouragement to leave the home. He is very intelligent and especially loves math. He would like to learn to code in Unity to make video games. He has a written output learning disability and overall is an atypical learner who doesn’t respond well to typical teaching strategies used in schools.
Our 11-year-old daughter is also autistic and has ADHD. She is sensitive, creative, and artistic. She loves drawing, making sculptures out of cardboard, creating (and selling!) custom barrettes and going on outings in the community (thrifting, going to the craft store, or to the beach are all favourites). She previously attended French Immersion, so speaking, reading and writing French would be an asset. She is intelligent and artistically gifted, but also has learning disabilities in math, reading and writing. She is an extremely hard worker who has made great progress with 1:1 tutoring after years of not receiving appropriate support at her in-person school.
They also have 2 awesome older siblings who are attending high school in person (aged 14 and 16) and who sometimes join in with what the younger ones are doing. We also have a very friendly cat, so if you are allergic, we probably are not the best fit for you. We also have two adorable bunnies, but they stay in their rooms and can be avoided.
You are creative, reliable, responsible, and good at communicating with parents and kids. You enjoy getting on the floor and engaging with children, are able to be silly and have fun, and are willing to use creative strategies to connect with our children while implementing educational and therapy plans.
Furthermore, you are comfortable being part of a very busy (and sometimes untidy) household where relationships and emotional safety are prioritized above all else. You also enjoy collaborating with a professional team that includes the family, an OT, a PT, a specialized OG tutor, a pediatrician and other medical specialists, an online supervising teacher, and other tutors.
You would be responsible for helping to develop activities to meet BC learning objectives in collaboration with parents, the OL supervising teacher, and other tutors. These activities would take place in-person, either at our home or out in the community. You also would be responsible for reporting learning activities using the school’s online reporting systems.
You also are willing to do basic caregiving tasks, such as serving snacks/light lunch and helping with tasks such as putting on sunscreen. For tutoring sessions, a parent or other responsible adult would always be present. There is also the opportunity for additional caregiving hours helping to support social and emotional development, which would be paid through Autism Funding.
Work would be done at our home or in the community. Shifts could be around 2-4 hours long, and there would be a possibility to have a longer shift by working with both children. We prefer a regular weekly schedule, but it can be adjusted to accommodate school or other responsibilities. If you are able to drive or comfortable taking kids on the bus that would also be a plus. We also prefer someone who could commit to the upcoming academic year, but would welcome tutors who will be part of our team for longer.
Must be 19 or over, have a clean criminal record check, and be able to legally work in Canada, and be willing to invoice Autism Funding and/or the Online School. This is not a cash position.
