J&S Custom Furniture is a solid wood fine furniture shop looking to add an apprentice to our Vancouver workshop.
Since 2012, our team of professional craftsmen has handcrafted over 10,000+ unique pieces of solid wood furniture and millwork. Everything we build is made to order in our Vancouver workshop using real timber and quality materials sourced from sustainable and local suppliers.
We are looking for a year 1-4 Cabinetmaker apprentice who wants to specialize in high quality solid wood joinery. Experience in a cabinet shop, millwork shop, furniture shop, or similar woodworking environment is required.
This is initially a part-time position ( 24-32 hours a week) with the opportunity to grow into full-time contract work for the right person.
What We're Looking For:
• Year 1-4 Cabinetmaker/Joiner apprentice, BCIT training preferred.
• Basic knowledge of woodworking tools, machinery, and shop safety.
• Comfortable working with real solid wood and large timbers.
• Some experience with standard woodworking equipment such as table saws, jointers, planers, band saws, mitre saws, sanders, and drills is an asset.
• Able to safely lift and handle materials weighing 50 lbs or more.
• Good attention to detail and an interest in quality craftsmanship.
• Able to follow instructions and positively receive feedback.
• Reliable, punctual, and able to work efficiently as part of a small team.
• Motivated to learn new skills and develop an understanding of solid wood furniture construction, joinery, wood movement, finishing, and traditional furniture-making techniques.
• Interested in growing with the company and taking on greater responsibility as skills develop.
About the Position:
You will work alongside experienced Joiners on a wide variety of custom projects. Depending on your existing skill level, you'll assist with material preparation, milling, sanding, joinery, assembly, finishing, and other aspects of building handcrafted solid wood furniture.
We are looking to invest in the training of a local apprentice to add to our team of carpenters. The successful candidate will already be established in their Cabinetmaker apprenticeship and are looking to challenge themselves in a fast-paced workshop environment, learning to build a wide variety of technically complex high-quality furniture and millwork items.
Pay is based on experience and demonstrated skill level.
