I sat down to write a recruiting ad and instead wrote a rant. I deleted it, wrote it again, deleted it again, and finally, here we are.
Apparently I've got something to say.
STOP BLAMING DRIVERS FOR LEAVING JOBS THAT NEVER EXISTED.
The trucking industry loves to complain about drivers jumping from company to company. Heck, I used to categorize it as a red flag when reviewing job applications. Over the years, though, I have come to realize that job jumping is the SYMPTOM.
It seems like nobody wants to talk about the problem itself. So here’s my hot take:
TRUCKING DOESN'T HAVE A DRIVER LOYALTY PROBLEM. IT HAS A BROKEN PROMISE PROBLEM.
Drivers aren't packing up their trucks and changing companies because they enjoy orientation videos and drug tests. They're often leaving because what they were sold and what they got were two completely different things. And then they’re labeled as the problem when they walk away.
What frustrates me is that trucking companies continue to peddle fairy tales during recruiting, and somehow we've created an industry where drivers have to figure out which promises are actually worth believing.
At Hell Bent Xpress, I have always believed that loyalty starts before the first load. It starts with telling the truth. NO BAIT. NO SWITCH. NO RECRUITING FAIRY TALES. Just honest conversations about what you can expect.
Let's face it: trucking isn't always sunshine and rainbows. Freight changes. Some weeks are better than others. Plans go sideways. Sometimes trucking is just trucking. Experienced drivers already know that.
At the end of the day, I don't want a driver choosing Hell Bent Xpress because I painted the prettiest picture. We're not perfect. We don't pretend to be. And we're certainly not going to tell you whatever you want to hear just to get your ass in one of our trucks.
But we will tell you what you can realistically expect, and we'll let YOU decide if we're the right company for you.
That's it. That's the standard.
KEEPING DRIVERS SHOULDN'T START WITH MAKING BIGGER PROMISES. IT SHOULD START WITH KEEPING THE ONES YOU MAKE.
And drivers? Here’s the other side of that coin: You deserve honest answers, but you’ve got to be willing to ask the tough questions too.
Stop letting somebody sell you a dream without asking what happens when reality shows up.
Ask about the bad weeks. Ask about the challenges. Ask what happens when things don't go according to plan.
And if you're considering Hell Bent Xpress, I expect you to ask us those same questions.
I'D RATHER HAVE AN EMPTY SEAT THAN FILL IT WITH A BROKEN PROMISE.
So there it is. If you're ready for a different kind of recruiting conversation, I’m ready to have one. You can call me directly at 605-982-0284.
End rant.
