We Are Looking for an Experienced CNC Programmer
PlaSteel is seeking an experienced CNC Programmer with strong Mastercam skills and a solid background in hands-on CNC machining.
We are looking for a professional who understands that successful CNC programming involves considerably more than generating toolpaths on a computer. It requires an understanding of machining processes, cutting tool technology, workholding, fixture design, machine capabilities, and the practical realities of running a production job.
The ideal candidate has professional CNC programming experience and has spent time operating CNC equipment. You understand how programming decisions affect the machinist, the machine, the workpiece, and the finished product.
This is an opportunity to join an established precision manufacturing operation where your programming knowledge and manufacturing experience will make a direct contribution to production.
Responsibilities
CNC Programming
• Create, develop, modify, and optimize CNC programs using Mastercam.
• Program CNC milling and turning operations.
• Develop programs for 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis machining applications.
• Program CNC lathes, including live-tooling operations.
• Work with Fanuc, Haas, and Mazak machine controls.
• Develop efficient machining strategies and operation sequences.
Manufacturing Process Development
• Select appropriate cutting tools based on material, geometry, and machining requirements.
• Establish appropriate feeds, speeds, chip loads, and depths of cut.
• Understand cutter geometry, flute count, helix angles, coatings, and tool performance.
• Evaluate radial and axial cutting engagement and its effect on machining performance.
• Develop machining sequences that account for workpiece rigidity, remaining material, and workholding.
• Design and develop fixtures and workholding solutions.
• Consider machine accessibility, operator ergonomics, and ease of part inspection when developing programs.
Production Support
• Work directly with machinists to prove out programs and troubleshoot machining issues.
• Improve existing programs and manufacturing processes.
• Create and maintain detailed setup sheets.
• Prepare ballooned drawings and manufacturing sketches.
• Identify tooling requirements and coordinate tooling orders.
• Support new jobs and existing production operations.
Required Qualifications
• Minimum 3 years of professional CNC programming experience using Mastercam in a production manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated experience creating and supporting programs used on actual production equipment.
• Previous hands-on experience operating CNC machines.
• Strong understanding of CNC milling and turning processes.
• Knowledge of cutting tools, tool geometry, coatings, feeds, speeds, and machining strategies.
• Understanding of workholding, fixture design, and workpiece stability.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints.
• Experience with Fanuc, Haas, and/or Mazak controls.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with manufacturing personnel.
Important: This is not an entry-level programming position. Completion of Mastercam University courses, online training, or use of the Mastercam Home Learning Edition alone does not constitute the professional production programming experience required for this position.
Preferred Experience
• 4-axis and 5-axis CNC milling.
• CNC lathe programming with live tooling.
• Experience programming both milling and turning operations.
• Fixture design and manufacturing process development.
• GD&T and precision blueprint interpretation.
• Experience with additional CAD/CAM software.
Compensation
Compensation will be based on demonstrated professional experience, technical capabilities, and qualifications.
We are willing to consider experienced senior-level candidates whose background and capabilities exceed the minimum requirements.
