Vintage Persian Kashan rug was hand knotted in Iran of 100% natural wool on a cotton foundation. This rug is 60+ years old, and is signed within the border cartouche, indicating workshop attribution and elevating it above standard production Kashan rugs. A striking hand-knotted Persian Kashan carpet featuring a richly saturated midnight navy field anchored by a bold crimson central medallion, surrounded by an exceptionally intricate network of scrolling vines, palmettes, and floral sprays. This piece exemplifies the classic Kashan aesthetic, known for its refined drawing, balanced symmetry, and luxurious color palette. The field is densely ornamented with vase motifs and blossoming florals, a design language associated with traditional Persian garden symbolism, which is representing abundance, paradise, and prosperity. The wide red border is filled with animated floral elements and guard bands, creating strong visual framing that makes this rug particularly effective in both traditional and modern interiors. The common design of a Kashan centers around a medallion, curved linear motifs like palmettos, leaves and arabesques designs encompass it throughout its surface area. From the medallion, the work across the rugs body is densely designed, giving it a thorough amount of character and originality that sets it apart from other Persian rug styles. Many Persian Kashan rugs follow a medallion-and-corner pattern, sometimes referred to as the book-cover or Koran design. The design, which arose during the 15th and 16th centuries, takes its inspiration from the beautifully tooled leather covers that were used to bind the Koran. The covers themselves were based on the intricate patterns found in the dome of mosques. The traditional colors used in Iranian Kashans are rich reds, blues, ivory, yellow, burnt orange and sometimes green. This classic design, like all hand knotted rugs, comes in a variety of qualities. These carpets have a 100 percent wool pile on a cotton base. The pile is clipped relatively short to allow the clarity of the design to come through. These rugs are typically dense and heavy.
