The common design of a Kashan centers around a medallion, curved linear motifs like palmettos, leaves and arabesques designs encompass it throughout its surface area. From the medallion, the work across the rugs body is densely designed, giving it a thorough amount of character and originality that sets it apart from other Persian rug styles. Many Persian Kashan rugs follow a medallion-and-corner pattern, sometimes referred to as the book-cover or Koran design. The design, which arose during the 15th and 16th centuries, takes its inspiration from the beautifully tooled leather covers that were used to bind the Koran. The covers themselves were based on the intricate patterns found in the dome of mosques. The traditional colors used in Iranian Kashans are rich reds, blues, ivory, yellow, burnt orange and sometimes green. This classic design, like all hand knotted rugs, comes in a variety of qualities. These carpets have a 100 percent wool pile on a cotton base. The pile is clipped relatively short to allow the clarity of the design to come through. These rugs are typically dense and heavy.
