This 12-foot runabout was built in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by the Wagemaker Company. It was found and restored by a master woodworker in Central Lake, Michigan, who sold it to me in 2018. His intention was not for a Concours d’Elegance restoration, but the extensive work he put into this boat transformed it from a crusty barn-find to a thing of beauty. I usually describe this runabout as a rat rod for the water, and most folks who see it say that it’s just about the cutest little boat they’ve ever seen.
Since 2018, I’ve outfitted this boat with a 12-volt marine battery and mounted a starter solenoid, battery switch, fuse block, battery charger and USB charging panel, on a marine plywood dashboard beneath the center deck section. I’ve also installed bow and stern lights, fire extinguisher, horn, and twin bilge pumps with electronic bilge pump switches, with all boat wiring run through black wire loom tubing. I’ve also added closed-cell foam seats and Wagemaker Wolverine badges on both sides of the stern, along with suspension support struts, safety chains, stop/turn/tail lights, a license plate light, and white wall tires with baby moon hubcaps on the trailer, which was also fully repainted in 2026.
Finally, I’ve had both engines repaired and tuned up, wired the electric start engine to the starter and choke switches, and fabricated an aluminum switch panel for the starter/choke/lights/bilge switches, which I’ve mounted on the front dash opposite the steering wheel. The only mod left undone is to attach shut-off wires to the magnetos on both engines. I’ve already mounted a shut-off push button and a lanyard kill switch at the throttle controls and run their wires through the conduit to the stern, which will connect to the magneto shut-off wires from either engine with waterproof connectors.
This boat has spent most of her time here under a custom cover in a dry, heated garage, and last year I purchased a brand new 14.5 ft. Glen L Zip wooden boat that takes up the last bit of space. My family loves our little Wagemaker Wolverine, but it’s a bit of a cramped ride for all of us and our 105 lb. golden retriever. We’ve only been out on her a handful of times in the eight years we’ve owned her, but none of us are eager to sell her, so the price is very firm.
