Trek, Giant, Cannondale, Specialized and similar high quality bicycles available for the same amount of money you will spend at a department store. These are a much better value, and will last a whole lot longer. Bikes that are several hundred dollars more new don't come close to these bikes in quality. Most are mountain bikes, but I have road/hybrid tires that I will swap onto them for free if that's what you are looking for.
There are adds for each individual bike with all the specifics.
Regarding pricing:
If you don't want to spend a lot of money, but you want a bike that will last, you want to look at bikes that are older then 2007. After 2005 most of the manufacturers went over to China and the quality is not what it used to be. Yes, you're going to sacrifice modern conveniences such as hydraulic disk brakes, but if you're not racing you're not going to need them anyway and modern bikes are much more difficult and expensive to maintain. A quality older part will last you much longer then a cheap new one.
Your basic non-department store run on average $150 on up. For disc brakes you're looking at $250 on up. These bikes are great for the occasional ride around town or if you want something dependable on the street.
Higher end bikes with racing quality components, stronger rims, lighter frames, better tires, ect start at about $250 and go up from there. Tack on another $100+ for full suspension. You can take these bikes just about anywhere and on moderate to severe trail rides with no problem. And you don't need hydraulic disc brakes to do so. In fact, you're probably better off without them. I try to be fair about my prices and provide a good value.
