E Joseph Wheeler Jr, Washington businessman, attempted to put together a public offering in 1976 to raise money for the purchase and relocation of a Major League Baseball team to the Washington DC area. Sound familiar? This was the Green Bay Packers model.
Date of the stock prospectus was October 8, 1976. This followed the 1974 failed attempt to relocate the San Diego Padres to Washington before Ray Kroc purchased and rescued the Padres. But, Wheeler was unsuccessful. Another failed attempt to bring baseball back to the DC area after Bob Short moved the "expansion" Senators to Texas following the 1971 season.
