This is a great looking set of 5 vintage Landmark Chairs attributed to influential American designer Ward Bennett. Although the original paper labels are missing, these chairs have the proportions, ash wood frames, and corner joinery that are known signatures of the Landmark Chair, one of Ward Bennett’s most recognized works.
The American Institute of Architects hailed Bennett for “transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects.” Bennett’s designs are well represented in the MoMAs permanent collection and in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum. His design method was well known for stripping back a form until only what was necessary remained. He applied that process to a classic English chair when he designed the Landmark Chair for Brickel Associates in 1964. Newer versions of the Landmark Chair by Geiger can still be purchased toda,y starting at $4,200 per chair.
These 5 vintage chairs are the low arm version of the Landmark Chair, which make ideal dining chairs because they can be pushed in around a dable. The chairs feature sculpted ash wood frames displaying a striking grain pattern and rich sable oil finish. The woven blue upholstery on the seats and backs is original and in excellent condition.
The circa 1970s chairs are in excellent vintage condition. All chairs are exceptionally well made and sturdy. The wood finish is beautiful but shows minor wear, including scratches and finish loss. The upholstery fabric is very clean with minimal wear. There is a small dot on one of the seat cushions. However, the seat padding is a bit fla, but all chairs are ready to use as-is. Please see photos for more details about the condition of the chairs.
Each chair measures 23" wide, 24" deep, and 32.5" tall with an 18.5” seat height and 20.5" arm height at front.
Price is for the set of 5.
