Part-Time Afternoon/Evening Tutor & Support Worker
Hours: Part-time, approximately 17 hours/week
Schedule: Primarily afternoons and evenings, with some flexibility required around the client's school schedule
We are seeking a patient, encouraging, and reliable tutor/support worker to assist a woman in her 30s–40s who is attending a Health Care Assistant (HCA) program.
The primary focus of this position is academic tutoring and learning support. The client has a learning disability and benefits from patient, one-on-one assistance with reading comprehension, spelling, written materials, study skills, organization, and understanding course assignments.
This is an ideal position for someone who enjoys teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or helping others build confidence in their abilities. You do not need to be an expert in healthcare or have advanced academic qualifications. What matters most is that you are patient, supportive, able to explain things clearly, and comfortable working through challenging material one step at a time.
Responsibilities:
* Provide one-on-one tutoring and academic support while the client attends the HCA program
* Help with reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and written assignments
* Work through course materials and help the client understand what she is reading
* Assist with studying, reviewing, and preparing for tests and quizzes
* Help develop effective study habits, organization, and learning strategies
* Break down difficult information into smaller, easier-to-understand sections
* Help the client stay focused and motivated when working on schoolwork
* Provide encouragement and help build confidence with academic tasks
* Assist with understanding assignment instructions and organizing completed work
* Help identify areas where additional practice or review is needed
* Provide accountability and structure during afternoon/evening study sessions
Requirements:
* Criminal record check
* Patient, positive, and encouraging personality
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Comfortable providing one-on-one tutoring and explaining information in different ways
* Ability to work patiently with someone who may need additional time to process written information
* Comfortable supporting someone with ADHD, depression, and anxiety
* Reliable and dependable
* Ability to maintain professional boundaries
* **Available primarily during afternoons and evenings**
Assets:
* Previous tutoring, teaching, educational assistance, or mentoring experience
* Experience supporting individuals with learning disabilities
* Experience in support work, caregiving, or mental health support
* Post-secondary education or experience in education, healthcare, or a related field
* Strong reading, writing, and communication skills
About the Role:
This position is primarily an afternoon/evening tutoring and academic support role.
The client is currently attending a Health Care Assistant (HCA) program and requires regular one-on-one assistance to understand and work through course material. Her academic skills are approximately at a Grade 10 level, so the focus is not on advanced subject knowledge but on helping her understand written information, develop effective study techniques, and become more confident and independent as a student.
The ideal candidate is someone who is patient, kind, dependable, and genuinely enjoys helping someone learn. You should be comfortable saying, "Let's break this down and work through it together," rather than simply giving the answer.
The goal is to provide consistent academic support while helping the client develop the confidence, organization, and learning strategies she needs to succeed in her HCA program.
The HCA program is from October this year to October next year.
