Vintage R Atkinson Fox print - Mountain Scene: “Where Brooks Send Up a Cheerful Tune” - Frame 19”x17”
Frame 19” x 17”, image area 17” x 15”
Found at an estate sale, this evocative vintage 17” x 15” framed Art Deco or Art Nouveau offset lithograph print by noted Canadian artist and illustrator R. Atkinson Fox (1860-1935) is entitled "Where Brooks Send Up a Cheerful Tune". It shows a tall mountain peak that may be Mt. Sir Donald in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia. Three men ride in an open car that may be an early-model Rolls Royce on a mountain road beside a river.
This print is framed under glass in an elegant 19”x17” wood frame.
The second photo shows a 12” ruler for scale.
The colors of the print are bright and vibrant (see photos).
As is unfortunately all too often the case at estate sales, I wasn't able to learn anything about the age and history of this marvelous lithograph print, which I would guess to be at least 50 years old and may possibly date from the 1920’s. A barely visible caption at the bottom of the picture gives the title and identifies this as being Print 2263 (see photos).
One photo shows a detail of this painting as viewed through a 10X loupe.
Robert Atkinson Fox (1860-1935) is a prolific artist and illustrator from the Golden Age of Illustration. He’s best known for his paintings of rural subjects, especially cattle in pastures. He painted many pictures of the landscapes and wildlife of Canada including majestic mountain ranges, rushing rivers, as in this print, woodlands, and wildlife. People who love Maxfield Parrish’s neo-classical paintings often like R. Atkinson Fox’s work too because it captures the same mood. There is an R. Atkinson Fox Society with its own website.
The ornate gilt frame is in very good condition (see photos). This framed picture weighs 3 lbs. 5 oz., making it easy to hang.
