The Artist & Background
• Artist: The piece is signed in the lower right corner by Mike Long.
• Bio Context: According to the original label on the backing paper, Mike Long operated Mountain Adventures, a Seattle-based service specializing in climbing instruction, professional guiding, and outdoor photography.
The Scene
• Location: This photograph showcases a stunning winter alpine sunrise or sunset (Alpenglow) over a major Pacific Northwest volcanic peak—most likely Mount Baker or Mount Rainier—framed by evergreen trees heavily encrusted in deep winter snow and rime ice (often referred to as "snow ghosts").
Technical & Camera Skill
• Golden/Blue Hour Exposure: Capturing this requires pristine technical timing during twilight or dawn. Photographing snow is notoriously difficult because camera light meters tend to underexpose bright white landscapes, turning them grey. The photographer masterfully balanced the exposure to preserve the vibrant magenta-purple gradients in the sky while holding the soft blue shadow details on the snowdrifts.
• Depth of Field: A sharp, narrow aperture ($f/8$ to $f/16$) was utilized to maintain a deep depth of field, keeping both the textured snow needles on the close-up trees and the rugged ridges of the mountain peak miles away in crisp, tack-sharp focus.
Print & Frame Quality
• Print Type: This is a high-grade, professional gallery photographic print exhibiting rich color saturation and fine gradient transitions in the sky.
• Presentation: The print is professionally presented with a clean, archival white mat and housed in a minimalist, gallery-style black metal frame.
